Poor or insufficient ventilation within your home contributes to a decrease in air quality and subsequently results in an alarming increase in health conditions. 29% of the UK population (15.4m people) frequently experience mould in their home due to poor ventilation. With over half of this figure associated with privately rented accommodation.

What are the consequences of poor ventilation?

1.      Poor health

Without the correct ventilation the only thing you are ensuring is reduced air quality within your home. Fresh air will not enter, and the stagnant and stale air remains within the home causing:

·         Increased risks of creating respiratory issues

·         Effects on the immune system

·         An increased risk of asthma and allergies

 

2.      Energy consumption

Without adequate ventilation, it can be difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature within your home. Meaning that warm air lingers in the Summer and in Winter too much cold air enters, requiring more heating. Resulting in high energy consumption.

 

3.      Mould and moisture problems

Inadequate ventilation creates the perfect breeding ground for mould to grow. So how do you know that you have the right ventilation? We have put together some useful information and tips for you.


Ventilation Tips

·         Ensure the correct wall and ceiling siting, before the installation of the extractor fan ensure you think about the length of duct run and the number or bends

·         Correct operation of the extractor fan (humidistat/timer/standard/pullcord)

For example, a bathroom with a high level of condensation should have a ‘humidistat’ fan over a pullcord/switch(standard)/timer operated fan. 

·         A pullcord or standard operated fan will stop extracting when the pullcord or wall switch is turned off respectively.  A timer model (has a built-in adjustable time delay) can continue to operate after the pullcord, or wall switch is turned off and will do so dependent on the time-delay selected on the fan.

DO NOT choose aesthetics over performance, sometimes the sleeker looking fans are not the best product to ventilate your property.

1.      Longer duct runs and too many bends can cause pressure to build-up along the ducting which impairs performance of the extractor fan. 

2.      Then most common ask amongst homeowners is to have quiet fans, so they can enjoy a peaceful home environment.
