Fire Protection – Getting the right smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms for your home

Did you know? In England, fire rescue services attended 25,591 dwelling related fires in the year ending March 2024, resulting in 180 fatalities and 2,743 people requiring non-fatal hospital treatment.

All of which could have been prevented with adequate fire protection in place. It serves as an early warning that can save lives. Recognising the significance of fire safety standards will help safeguard families, particularly young children and the elderly, in case a fire ignites or spreads.

Considering this, there have been notable updates to the building regulations concerning domestic fire protection. The pivotal standard, BS 5839-6, offers guidance on the categories and grades of fire protection necessary based on the type of residence. Categories of Fire Protection

LD2 Protection – This involves installing alarms in all circulation spaces that are part of escape routes, as well as in rooms or areas with a high fire risk, including hallways, landings, living rooms, kitchens, and loft extensions.

LD1 Protection – This encompasses alarms in all circulation spaces that form part of escape routes and in every area where a fire could potentially ignite. This offers the highest level of protection, adding coverage for areas beyond LD2, such as bedrooms, airing/meter cupboards, and attached garages.

 

Grades of Fire Protection

Grade D1 – A system of one or more mains-powered detectors each with a tamper-proof standby supply consisting of a sealed lithium battery.

Grade D2 – A system of one or more mains-powered detectors each with an integral standby supply consisting of user-replaceable batteries.

Grade F1 - A system of one or more battery-powered detectors each with a tamper-proof supply consisting of a sealed lithium battery.

Grade F2 – A system of one or more battery-powered detectors each with an integral supply consisting of user-replaceable batteries.


Types of Dwelling

  • Owner occupied homes, should have Grade 2 compliant fire alarm detectors in all circulation spaces and high-risk rooms to provide fire protection that complies with LD2.

Smoke & Fire Alarms Must-Knows

  • Don’t limit smoke alarms to just your hall and landing; ensure they are installed in any room where a fire could ignite. This includes areas where you smoke or where appliances are often left plugged in.

  • While smoke alarms aren’t suitable for kitchens, heat alarms are a great alternative. Installing a heat alarm in your kitchen will alert you to rising temperatures from a fire without being triggered by cooking fumes.

  • Some battery-operated or mains-powered alarms can be interconnected, so when one detects a fire, all will sound simultaneously, ensuring you receive a warning no matter where you are in your home. This is especially vital for individuals with mobility issues or other challenges that might impede their escape, as it allows them to be notified of a fire as quickly as possible.

  • If you opt for a mains-powered alarm, have it installed by a qualified electrician.


This Month’s Top Tips for Keeping Your Home Safe

  1. Use interconnectable alarm detectors to give you warning wherever you are in the house.  Some battery or mains-operated alarms can be interlinked so that when one alarm detects a fire, they all go off together.

  2. Fit a heat alarm in your kitchen.  This will give you warning of an increase in temperature caused by fire and will not set off by cooking fumes.

  3. Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colourless, tasteless, odourless and poisonous gas that can be produced as a by-product of fires and appliances that burn gas, wood, oil and coal.  Typical examples include gas stoves, fireplaces, boilers, water heaters and cookers.  CO alarms should be fitted and maintained in every room with fuel-burning appliances and rooms where people sleep.

  4.  Don't just fit a smoke alarm in your hall and landing.  Follow BS 5839-6 recommendations and choose alarm detectors with a 10-year or long-lasting sealed battery.

  5. Make sure any alarms you buy are kitemarked with a current British Standards or European (CE) safety mark.
